Each-way betting is one of the most popular bet types in horse racing. It gives you two bets in one — a win bet and a place bet — doubling your chances of a return.
An each-way bet consists of two equal stakes: one bet on the horse to win, one bet on the horse to place (usually top 2, 3 or 4 depending on field size and race type). The place part pays at a fraction of the win odds (usually 1/4 or 1/5).
| Race Type | Places Paid | Odds Fraction |
|---|---|---|
| Handicaps (16+ runners) | 4 | 1/4 |
| Handicaps (8-15 runners) | 3 | 1/4 |
| Non-handicaps (8+) | 3 | 1/5 |
| All races (5-7) | 2 | 1/4 |
Each-way value is highest in large-field handicaps where the place part offers genuine value. Horses priced 8/1 to 16/1 are the sweet spot for each-way betting.
Each-way means you place two bets: one to win and one to place. If your horse finishes in the places, the place bet pays out at a fraction of the win odds.
An each-way bet costs double your stake — one stake for the win and one for the place.
Place terms determine how many positions pay out and at what fraction of the odds. Typically 1/4 or 1/5 odds for top 2-4 positions.
Each-way is most valuable in large-field races with horses priced 8/1 to 16/1 where the place part offers genuine value.
